Known Limitations
Wonderthrough is in closed beta, and some things either aren’t built yet or only work in one place. This page is the honest list, so you can plan around it rather than discover it mid-draft. Everything here is expected to change — where a limit is deliberate rather than temporary, it says so.
Which platforms can I use?
Section titled “Which platforms can I use?”The web app runs in any modern browser. The desktop app is macOS on Apple Silicon only — there is no Intel Mac, Windows, or Linux build, and no mobile app. Apple Silicon is a deliberate constraint: the on-device search index depends on a component that no longer ships an Intel Mac version.
Can I download the desktop app?
Section titled “Can I download the desktop app?”Not yet. The macOS app goes to beta writers directly rather than through a public download, so the Download page won’t hand you an installer during closed beta. You don’t need it — the web app has the full feature set apart from the desktop-only items below.
What’s desktop-only?
Section titled “What’s desktop-only?”Running AI entirely on your own machine with a local model server is desktop-only by design — a browser can’t safely run or hold local models. See Local LLM Setup. Import options also vary a little by platform, and the web app applies size ceilings the desktop app doesn’t; Import & Merge has the specifics.
Why did my empty chapter folders disappear when I imported a folder in the browser?
Section titled “Why did my empty chapter folders disappear when I imported a folder in the browser?”Because the browser can’t see them. When you pick a folder in the web app, the browser hands Wonderthrough a list of files — a folder holding nothing at all isn’t in that list, so there is no way to know it was ever there. This is a browser limitation, not a choice: we won’t invent folders we can’t see.
Empty folders are often the most deliberate structure in a project — the Chapter 1 … Chapter 20 outline you built before writing a word — so there are two ways to keep them:
- Zip the folder first, then import the
.zip. A zip file records its empty folders, so they all come through, in the browser as well as on the desktop. - Use the desktop app, which reads the folder from disk and sees every folder, empty or not.
Either way, an empty folder imports as an empty folder: it becomes part of your book’s structure and adds no blank scenes.
Can I write with someone else, or share a project?
Section titled “Can I write with someone else, or share a project?”No. Wonderthrough is single-author today: a project belongs to one account, and there’s no way to invite a collaborator, share a project, or co-write. Syncing moves your work between your devices — it isn’t a sharing mechanism.
How good is the AI if I run it locally?
Section titled “How good is the AI if I run it locally?”Local models handle summarization and lighter tasks well, but complex analysis — trajectory inference, book synthesis — can be noticeably weaker than cloud models. Try Chunk Summarization on your own manuscript first to judge the quality before relying on local models for deeper work. Details in Local LLM Setup.
Is the demo available?
Section titled “Is the demo available?”Not during early closed beta. When the demo is off, its links are hidden rather than left to dead-end. Feature voting is also switched off at first launch — see Community & Feedback.
Can I read help inside the app?
Section titled “Can I read help inside the app?”Not yet — help lives on the website, so you’ll leave the app to read it. There’s also no in-app “what’s new” notification; new releases are posted to the changelog on the website.
How do I get my data out, or delete my account?
Section titled “How do I get my data out, or delete my account?”Manuscript and project export work from inside the app — see Export & Backup. Deleting your cloud data, or your whole account, is self-service — Settings → Privacy & Data → Your data, and Settings → Account for the account itself. A full copy of everything we hold about you is still handled by email: write to support@wonderthrough.com and we’ll respond within two business days. Privacy & Data covers what’s included and how the 48-hour reversal window works.
Something here is blocking me. What do I do?
Section titled “Something here is blocking me. What do I do?”Tell us — a limitation that’s blocking real work is the most useful thing you can report during beta, and it moves priorities. Use the in-app feedback form or email support@wonderthrough.com; Community & Feedback explains both.
